The City of Big Bear Lake has a number of projects included in its Capital Improvement Programs to improve the area of Stanfield Marsh. The Stanfield Marsh is located to the northeast of Big Bear Boulevard and Stanfield Cutoff and presently includes a public parking lot, foot paths, and wooden boardwalks to allow for recreation in the area. In September 2021, the City Council authorized staff to execute the necessary documents to transfer these assets from the Municipal Water District (MWD) to the City of Big Bear Lake. The City’s Five-Year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) includes funding of approximately $2.2 million for various improvements in this area over the next several years.

Stanfield Marsh Outdoor Recreation and Education (SMORE) Project COMPLETED

The Stanfield Marsh Outdoor Recreation and Education (SMORE) Trail Part 1 Project includes the establishment of expanded paved trails on the site to improve accessibility to the recreational and educational opportunities in this area.

Previously, as a component of this project, the City executed an MOU with the Southern California Mountains Foundation (SCMF) to provide landscaping, planting, and fence construction for this project. The work will be done by their Urban Conservation Corps, which creates employment opportunities for at risk youth, under the supervision of SCMP staff.

Stanfield Parking Lot Project COMPLETED

In September 2021, the City Council authorized the acquisition from the Big Bear Municipal Water District (MWD) the Stanfield Marsh Boardwalks and other surrounding land, including the parking lot at the corner of Stanfield Cutoff and Big Bear Boulevard. The project consists of improving the parking lot by paving the existing dirt surface, installing concrete curb and gutter, cleaning the landscape areas, drainage improvements, and providing accessible stalls and routes to existing facilities.

Stanfield Marsh Boardwalks Improvements Project - COMPLETED

Prior to the City's acquisition of the property/boardwalk, the boardwalk was more than 25 years olf and was in need of rehabilitation. Included in the Fiscal Year 2022-23 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget was to rehabilitate the boardwalks by replacing the existing decking and handrails along them. This project will improve the aesthetics of the boardwalks, minimize any tripping or existing safety concerns, and extend the life and utility of these popular amenities. A portion of the funding for these improvements came from a $500,000 contribution from MWD.

Stanfield Cutoff Restroom Project - COMPLETED

The installation of a public restroom facility was included in the Fiscal Year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and is now FINISHED! The pre-fabricated restroom includes the following: three (3) ADA accessible, gender neutral bathroom stalls, a drinking fountain & a water bottle filling station!
